RANGE SYNTAX

How ranges, order and repeated page numbers behave

Predict a selection such as 5, 2-4, 3 and understand which pages appear once in the output.

The selection field accepts comma-separated page numbers and ascending ranges. It keeps the order in which unique positions first appear. That behavior lets you assemble a short reading sequence, but repeated numbers are removed rather than becoming repeated copies of a page.

Expand the request before processing it

Consider the input 5, 2-4, 3. Expanding the range gives the requested sequence 5, 2, 3, 4, 3. The final 3 has already appeared, so RSPageSelect leaves it out. The output order is 5, 2, 3, 4. Writing out a short sequence first is a useful way to predict a less familiar request before extracting an important document.

Use ascending ranges for consecutive positions

A range such as 2-4 includes positions 2, 3 and 4. Each endpoint must lie within the source page count, and the first endpoint must not exceed the second. A reversed range such as 4-2 is rejected. If a nonconsecutive order is required, list individual positions such as 4, 2 rather than relying on a descending range that the field does not support.

Separate order from duplication

A request such as 3, 1-3 produces 3, 1, 2 because position 3 was already included. It does not return 3, 1, 2, 3. This tool is for selecting each requested position once, not for creating multiple copies of one source page. If a repeated-page document is required, use a workflow designed to duplicate pages and inspect that result separately.

Input: 5, 2-4, 3
Output positions: 5, 2, 3, 4

Input: 3, 1-3
Output positions: 3, 1, 2

Verify the saved reading sequence

After extraction, open the download and check both the number of pages and their order. A rearranged excerpt can be useful for a presentation or packet, but the source printed labels will not automatically be rewritten to match the new sequence. Retain the original and note the exact selection string if another revision will be needed. Correct syntax is only the first checkpoint; the saved content still needs review.

Put the example to work

Open the tool, enter your own inputs and review the result. The writing a page range that does what you expect guide explains the workflow and its limits.
