READING PACKETS

Build a short PDF excerpt that keeps enough context

Select the pages a reader needs while keeping the title, explanation and referenced material understandable.

An excerpt can be much easier to read than a complete report, but selecting only the most interesting page may remove the context that explains it. Plan the reader task before choosing positions. The goal is a small coherent packet, not simply the fewest possible pages.

Identify the question the excerpt should answer

Write one sentence describing what the recipient needs from the document. Then identify the page containing the relevant material and any page that defines its terms or explains the figure. A title or source page may also be useful. Keep the selection tied to the question so that the excerpt does not grow into another complete report without a clear purpose.

Check references within the selected pages

Read phrases such as see the next page, as defined earlier and refer to Appendix B. Decide whether the referenced page is necessary for this reader. A chart without its legend or a result without the calculation assumptions can be misleading even when copied correctly. RSPageSelect copies selected pages; it does not rewrite internal references to account for material you leave out.

Plan a readable order of positions

For a fictional report, you might select a cover at position 1, an explanation at position 4 and results at positions 9-10. Enter 1, 4, 9-10 and expect four pages. The selection field refers to file positions rather than the printed labels in the content. Confirm the actual positions in the source and avoid duplicate requests when the same context page supports several results.

Review the excerpt as if the source were unavailable

Open the saved file and read it from the beginning. Check whether the title, definitions and references make sense without the missing pages. Preserve the original and a note of the selected positions so you can add context later. If the material is not yours, confirm that you are entitled to share it; extraction changes the packet size but does not establish permission to distribute the content.

Put the example to work

Open the tool, enter your own inputs and review the result. The writing a page range that does what you expect guide explains the workflow and its limits.
